Instagram have announced via their blog that they have fixed the @mention issue many of us face when posting pictures from Instagram to Twitter.

Here is the problem that was happening:

Often users would have a different Twitter username to their Instagram username.

So a user would mention their Instagram friend and the update would post to Twitter – but the @mention link on Twitter would fail as it their friend may have a different username on Twitter.

The fix:

According to the Instagram blog –

If the @mentioned user has connected Instagram to Twitter:

  • The user’s Instagram username will appear in the photo caption
  • The user’s Twitter username will appear in the tweet

If the @mentioned user has not connected Instagram to Twitter:

  • The user’s Instagram username will appear in the photo caption
  • The @ sign will be removed from the username when shared to Twitter

For @mentions that do not match any Instagram usernames, the @ sign will remain when shared to Twitter.

This is a great update by Instagram to fix this niggling problem we have always had. There won’t be an application update needed for this fix, the change is happening behind the scenes on Instagram’s web servers that send updates to Twitter.
